I am drawn to landscapes with a path, a road, or a river leading into the distance. Places like these awaken my curiosity and give me the feeling that there is always something waiting beyond the next bend.
In these paintings, I try not only to capture a landscape, but also the sense of peace and space that I experience there myself. Perhaps they invite the viewer to do the same.

These small works were painted en plein air, often in Leiden and around, sometimes elsewhere in the Netherlands. To preserve the spontaneity of the moment and the local light, I mostly did not rework them in the studio, or only very little. Any imperfections are part of the atmosphere of working on location.

In summer, I often think back to the seemingly endless summers of my youth—long days spent outdoors in nature or at the beach, summer friendships, and a sense of longing.

These works have been painted during a plein air workshop in Bavaria, Germany, hosted by the American painter James Kroner. In some of these works, the spontaneity of the moment has been kept untouched, some have been elaborated on afterwards.

For many people, Leiden is a lively university city. Yet there are moments when it reveals a very different side. Early in the morning, late in the evening, or in a quiet park, the bustle and noise seem far away.
In these paintings, I look for that quieter side of the city. Not its busy streets, but its silent alleyways, soft light, and those places where, for a moment, you can forget that you are in the middle of a city.

Long walks invite reflection. While walking Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Path in northern England, I created these small gouache works along the way. I was impressed by these wide, empty landscapes - sometimes rugged, sometimes dreamlike. In addition to the gouache works, there are later works in oils and pastel.
