St. Bees lies at the beginning of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Path. This small gouache work, painted during the weeks of the walk, shows the path, the cliffs, and the lighthouse in the distance. A walker has begun his journey. The landscape is reduced to larger shapes and open space.
